Committee members also agreed to add standard meeting timing language indicating the committee will meet on the Monday prior to regular Tuesday board meetings, as needed, to allow time for follow-up before the full board packet is finalized.
Committee discussion focused on why the committee role was being restored and how to avoid slowing urgent hires. Board member Juan Romero said the earlier practice gave “an extra little space to be able to to look at something before it gets to the board's view,” describing the committee’s role as a pre-screen that sometimes flagged items for fuller review. Superintendent Doctor Garrison said the district receives many meeting requests and emphasized staff availability; he noted that during the past year the district logged many meetings, saying, “we were in school for about 190 some odd days, and 132 of them was in the meetings.” Members debated meeting cadence (one Monday before Tuesday board meetings versus meetings the day of a board meeting) and agreed to standardize on the Monday-before-Tuesday approach to provide time for follow-up.
The committee removed a redundant “reporting and recommendation” paragraph and edited language under personnel recommendation review to require documented justification for denials. The committee approved the revised Policy 185.4 with the changes and forwarded it for full-board consideration.
Votes at the committee: Motion to approve the amended Policy 185.4 passed by recorded voice vote; committee recorded three ayes and no recorded nays (motion carried).
