Commission adopts findings in demolition hearing for 219 Fifth Street East

The Dickinson City Commission voted July 1 to adopt findings from a June 17 demolition hearing that determined the structure at 219 Fifth Street East is unsafe and should be demolished under the municipal code.
City Attorney Zwanko presented the staff report and proposed findings, citing Dickinson Municipal Code 8‑1‑84 as the authority allowing demolition when a structure is deemed uninhabitable, unsafe or dangerous. Zwanko said staff will obtain contractor bids for demolition and may assess the property for contractor costs, landfill costs and any asbestos remediation if the commission’s findings stand.
Commissioner Frederick moved to adopt the findings; Commissioner Baer seconded the motion and the commission voted to approve. Zwanko reminded the commission and the public that the property owner has 30 days to file an appeal to district court; if no appeal is filed the city will proceed with the demolition process and cost assessment. No public comment on the item was recorded in the packet.
The commission’s action authorizes staff to solicit bids and to recover demolition costs per the municipal code process.
