Preschool policy update: Amherst board committee incorporates public comments, sends draft to policy committee

At the Amherst Central School District regular meeting, a board member reported that the district’s preschool committee reviewed public comments on a proposed preschool policy and adjusted the draft and FAQ accordingly before forwarding it to the policy committee for detailed review.

The committee’s presenter said the committee met on June 24, reviewed public comments and incorporated feedback into the policy draft and FAQs. “We had about 8 comments,” the presenter said, adding that the comments came from parents and staff across buildings and included both support and opposition. The presenter said the committee included representation from all four district buildings as well as parents, paraprofessionals, counselors, administrators and teachers.

The committee expects a superintendent presentation at the next full board meeting on Aug. 5 and anticipates bringing the policy forward for board approval at that time so it can be implemented for the new school year beginning in September.

Committee members said much of the committee’s work focused on clarifying procedures and making the policy’s steps easier to follow in school buildings. The presenter emphasized that the committee’s changes were intended to improve clarity for staff and families ahead of implementation.

The board did not take a formal vote on the preschool policy at this meeting; the item will next be reviewed by the policy committee, followed by a superintendent presentation and then a future board vote.
