The Davie County Schools Board of Education swore in Dr. Heath Belcher as its new superintendent during a board meeting. The board adopted the meeting agenda by motion before administering the oath, and later voted 6-0 to enter a closed session to discuss personnel matters.
Board member Cherry opened the meeting and moved to adopt the agenda as presented; Joe made the motion and Marie seconded. After a show of hands the agenda was approved as presented. The board then conducted a swearing-in ceremony for Dr. Heath Belcher. Jason administered the oath; during the ceremony Belcher repeated, “I, Heath Belcher,” and concluded the oath with, “So help me God.”
Board members paused to recognize Jenna for her recent service to the district; Cherry said Jenna “stepped up, did what she needed to do” and kept operations running during the transition. Cherry also described the superintendent selection process, saying roughly “400 and some” staff members and an additional “400 and some” community members completed a survey used to identify top priorities for the new superintendent. Cherry summarized that staff and community respondents named six matching priority areas, including “models high standards of integrity” (staff’s top priority), willingness to listen, creating safe environments for staff and students, communicating across races and socioeconomic status, and advocating for needed resources.
Later in the meeting a motion was made to go into closed session to discuss personnel matters; Jeff seconded the motion, and the board approved the motion 6-0. The board briefly recessed before entering the closed session. No further votes or personnel decisions were announced in the public portion of the meeting.
The swearing-in makes Belcher the district’s official superintendent; the board’s immediate next steps included the closed-session discussion of personnel matters and no additional public actions were disclosed at the meeting’s end.
