Board members discussed policy and operational topics raised at a recent community town hall and agreed to seek briefings and additional information from CPD training and wellness staff.
Board members reported the town hall at Stonewall Columbus had strong public turnout and raised questions about officer training on mental-health response, crisis intervention team (CIT) approaches, cultural competency and service to marginalized communities. The board asked staff to contact the CPD Training Academy to invite a commander or faculty member to present updated training modules and to work timing with Commander Lipp—s scheduled September appearance. Committee members suggested possible October-November-December slots if September was not feasible.
Separately, board members requested an update on officer wellness resources and programs after town-hall feedback. The board recalled an earlier voluntary program and asked staff to identify current wellness avenues and whether they remain voluntary or have changed.
Board members also discussed board composition and appointment timing. Participants said the board currently has three vacancies (the transcript records eight seated members of an 11-member board). Several members noted that many board terms end in April of next year (names cited in the meeting included Pastor Nathan, Dr. Ford and Miss Younger) and that city code limits consecutive terms. Discussion covered the existing rule that members serve until successors are chosen, which some members said can delay turnover if successors are not appointed. Board members discussed outreach options to the mayor—s office and city council to accelerate appointments and suggested using town halls and community networks to solicit candidates.
No formal policy change or ordinance edits were adopted during the meeting. Staff agreed to: - Reach out to the CPD Training Academy to schedule a briefing and to provide the board with proposed dates and a briefing memo. - Request an update on officer wellness programs and whether the resources are voluntary or mandatory. - Continue outreach to city government contacts and follow up on outstanding appointment applications.
