Onslow County Cooperative Extension opens Master Gardener applications; training starts Aug. 19

The Onslow County Cooperative Extension said it has nearly 50 Master Gardener volunteers and is accepting applications for the next training cohort. The class runs Aug. 19–Oct. 9, meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, and requires 40 hours of volunteer service the first year.
Emily Morrison of the Onslow County Cooperative Extension described the county's Extension Master Gardener program and upcoming volunteer training.
"We have a really awesome program here in Onslow County. We've got a strong group of volunteers, close to 50 right now," Morrison said, describing volunteers who provide research-based gardening advice to residents.
Morrison said applications for the Master Gardener class are due by July 21. The course runs from Aug. 19 through Oct. 9, meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants receive training on soils, composting, vegetable gardening, lawn care, pollinators and other topics tailored to North Carolina climate and conditions.
She said new Master Gardeners commit 40 hours of volunteer service in the first year and can support activities such as the plant clinic, discovery gardens and youth programs including a bucket-brigade produce project for lower-income households.
