Pike County adopts ordinance to align with state rules for street‑legal special‑purpose vehicles

Pike County fiscal court voted to adopt an ordinance aligning local rules with state law on street-legal special-purpose vehicles, such as certain side-by-sides and ATVs, and to accept whatever administrative regulations the state publishes.
County Attorney Roy presented the ordinance and told the court the county is adopting the state framework as it stands and that final administrative regulations could require subsequent local adjustments. “What we're basically doing is adopting the law that the state of Kentucky has put forth,” Roy said, adding that the state’s administrative regulations were expected to be published and could lead to later local changes.
The ordinance requires inspection, liability insurance and a sheriff’s inspection for vehicles to be registered for approved road use; county staff also said private-property use would not require registration. Roy said the county clerk’s office expects to tag these vehicles similarly to motorcycles and that a sheriff’s inspection form is ready.
A motion to adopt the ordinance passed by roll call: Commissioner Scott — yes; Commissioner Atkins — yes; Commissioner Lewis — yes; Judge Beth Jones — yes. Officials cautioned that if the state administrative regulations change after publication, the court may need to revisit the ordinance to stay aligned with state requirements.
