The Santa Rosa City Schools Board of Education approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the California School Employees Association (CSEA) at its June 25 meeting that adjusts salary ranges for several special‑education assistant classifications and changes the initial step for newly hired classified employees.
Key provisions: Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Dr. Vicki Zanz told the board the MOU raises several special‑education classifications (behavior assistants, extensive support‑needs assistants, DHH assistants and general special‑education assistants) to higher ranges to bring the district more in line with surrounding districts and the county office. The agreement also sets the starting step for newly hired classified employees at Step 2 rather than Step 1.
Why it matters: Staff and speakers said the adjustments are aimed at recruitment and retention for high‑need classifications, particularly special‑education paraprofessionals who support students with complex needs. The MOU also allows part‑time special‑education assistants working at least six hours to receive a prorated contribution equivalent to a full‑time contribution for benefits in certain classifications.
Vote: The board approved the MOU by roll call after staff presented the changes. Trustee Rosie Medina moved the item; trustees recorded ayes during the roll call.
Speakers: Dr. Zanz presented the item and explained the administrative details; trustees asked clarifying questions and then approved the MOU.
Ending: Staff will implement the updated pay ranges and adjust HR listings; the MOU is effective for the current fiscal cycle as recorded in the agreement.
