Canton adopts 'Canton’s Vision for Tomorrow' master plan after broad public engagement

The Canton Township Board of Trustees unanimously adopted Canton's updated comprehensive master plan, “Canton’s Vision for Tomorrow,” on June 24 after a multi‑year outreach process that produced more than 1,300 public responses and multiple stakeholder meetings.
What the plan contains: Township planning staff and consultants prepared the plan with input on land use, demographics, commercial corridors, transportation, infill development, neighborhood nodes, environmental preservation, community facilities, recreation and sustainability. The plan includes a future land‑use map allocating land for residential, commercial, mixed‑use, industrial and public/institutional uses and an implementation strategy of short‑term and longer-term actions.
Public process and conditions: The Planning Commission held the required public hearing (May 5) and unanimously recommended adoption. Trustees added a specific condition for Neighborhood Node 12: the board resolved the node shall not be implemented until the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) road‑safety audit recommendations for the Fort/Beck and Fort/Ridge intersections are implemented. Trustees said that condition reflects safety improvements the RSA identified (for example, turn‑lane and drainage upgrades) before denser node development proceeds.
Implementation next steps: Planning staff said many implementation items are already underway: transit planning, an urban-forestry master plan, sustainability planning, housing assessment and zoning updates. The adopted plan and resolution will be posted on the township website and staff will move into the implementation stage in coordination with relevant departments and stakeholders.
Board comments: Trustees and planning staff thanked the advisory board, planning commissioners and residents for extensive input and noted that the plan emphasizes inclusivity across ages and housing types, sustainability and community amenities.
Formal action: Motion to adopt was made by Trustee Foster and supported by Trustee Borninski; the board voted aye and adopted the plan with the Neighborhood Node 12 proviso.
