Conway Board of Zoning Appeals adjourns June 26 meeting for lack of quorum; four variance requests deferred

The Conway Board of Zoning Appeals convened at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26, but adjourned without conducting any official business after the chair said the panel was "woefully short of a quorum." The chair told those present that the panel could not hear four variance requests scheduled for the meeting and that those applications would automatically roll over to next month.

The chair, repeatedly noting the summer scheduling conflict among volunteer members, said, "we are woefully short of a quorum ... so we cannot conduct any official business." The chair also said the board could not approve minutes from the prior meeting because of the absent quorum.

An unidentified attendee asked, "What happens if you don't have a quorum next month then?" The chair replied that the items would continue to roll over until a quorum is present and said staff would notify attendees in advance if a quorum appeared unlikely. The chair specifically said staff member Ms. Wilkerson would inform participants if a lack of quorum was expected.

Because the panel lacked a quorum, the board did not hear or vote on any of the four variance requests listed on the agenda. The chair moved to adjourn, and an attendee seconded; no formal roll-call vote or tally of votes on agenda items was recorded in the meeting transcript. The chair concluded by saying attendees should expect the items to be heard in about 30 days.

The adjournment means applicants for the four variances will await the next scheduled meeting for formal consideration. Staff will notify applicants and other interested parties about the rescheduled hearings and any changes to the meeting date or time.
