Kathy Thorson, the Churchill County Library director, resigned effective June 19, the county's human resources representative told trustees during the June meeting.
The board of trustees instructed Churchill County Human Resources to run an open call for interim director candidates, have HR screen responses and return the top two or three candidates to the board for confirmation at a special meeting. HR and trustees also agreed to begin a national search for a permanent library director, with the board setting an initial four-week posting period for that recruitment.
Why it matters: The library director oversees daily operations, staffing and community programs; the board said it wants a short-term manager in place quickly to maintain stable service while conducting a deliberate national search for a permanent hire.
HR representative Kim Bronsonma told the board she had received Thorson's resignation on June 19 and asked trustees how they wanted to proceed. "I received the resignation, from our library director, Kathy Thorson, on June 19 effective immediately," Kim Bronsonma said.
County staff advised the board that the trustees have the authority to decide how to fill the interim post and that HR would assist with outreach and screening. "This is this board's decision. You have full control over the director position," Joe Sanford said during the meeting.
Trustees discussed multiple options: recruiting from internal county staff, soliciting interest from local school-district librarians, and an open call to the broader community. Trustees settled on an HR-managed open call for interim candidates to run for one week, with HR vetting responses and returning the top two or three candidates to the board for confirmation at a special meeting. The board set the special meeting for July 11 at 3:00 p.m. for that confirmation step.
Compensation and length: Trustees debated whether to require the interim be paid. Trustee Sue Segura expressed a preference for a paid interim, saying a volunteer can quickly become unavailable under the job's demands. The board directed that letters of interest should include any compensation request so trustees can evaluate pay when reviewing candidates. The trustees left the formal compensation decision to HR advisement and to the board when selecting a candidate.
Permanent director search: Trustees also approved a national posting for the permanent director position to run four weeks starting early next week, using the previously approved job description. Kim Bronsonma said HR will prescreen applicants and bring recommended candidates back to the board for interviews, and that the board will perform final interviews as in the prior search. Trustees asked that a representative of the Churchill Library Association (CLA) assist with vetting as a community panel member, if available.
Public comment: Zip Hovland, president of the Churchill Library Association, thanked trustees for the board's work on the library strategic plan and said the CLA would help publicize the interim call and the director search. "In a perfect world, what we'd really like to do is have a new director in place, have a date, and then use the Books, Bites, and Beverages outreach event to introduce the new director to the community," Zip Hovland said.
Formal actions: The board voted unanimously to proceed with the HR-managed open call for interim candidates and to approve the process for the permanent director search with a four-week posting period.
Next steps and timeline: The board agreed to post the interim call immediately (posting to run roughly one week, taking down July 7), convene a special meeting on July 11 at 3:00 p.m. to consider HR's top candidates for interim director, and to post the permanent director position nationally for four weeks starting early next week. Trustees said the interim assignment would end when the permanent director is hired and starts work.
