District reports local indicator results: facilities in good repair, focus needed on ELA and EL professional development

Assistant Superintendent Autry Streak and Director Stephanie Groat presented Washington Unified School District's locally calculated California Dashboard indicators on June 26, covering both the district and Washington Middle College High School.

Groat summarized results across several local priorities (basic conditions, academic standards, family engagement, local climate and access to a broad course of study). For priority 1 (basic conditions), district Williams compliance data showed 0% of students without access to instructional materials and most facilities were reported "in good repair" using the Facilities Inspection Tool (FIT). For priority 2 (standards implementation), the district rated most areas as initial implementation or full implementation; identified areas for focused professional development included ELA (English language arts) with a recent adoption and English language development.

For family engagement (priority 3) the district reported strengths in building relationships and seeking input, and recommended increasing family volunteers and targeted community forums on student safety and homework support. For Washington Middle College, presenters noted the school largely meets standards but identified access to Career Technical Education (CTE) sequences and on-site physical education as areas to monitor; staff confirmed the school is hiring an on-site PE teacher next year, which staff said will increase local access to physical education previously taken through the community college.

Groat said the district will upload the local indicator information to the state California Dashboard, which is typically published in the fall, and will continue to use the indicators when reviewing the district's Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).
