Board acknowledges City of Douglas notice of annexation affecting Sunnyside Special Fire District

Cochise County civil staff notified the Board of Supervisors Thursday that the City of Douglas has filed documents indicating it intends to annex portions of the Sunnyside Special Fire District.
Denise Ryden of the civil deputy—s office told supervisors the county—s role at this stage is limited to acknowledging the city—s certified notice. Ryden said the filing provides the county with statutory notice that the city is proceeding with an annexation petition; the board does not at this point approve or disapprove annexations.
Supervisors asked several procedural questions, including whether annexation would require the city to reimburse the special fire district if it annexed all district property. Staff replied that reimbursement requirements would apply if the city annexed the entire district, and that multiple county offices (including the assessor) were reviewing petition materials and signature counts.
Board members removed the item from the consent list to allow staff to present the background and recommended scheduling of a future work session if the annexation process progresses and additional county action becomes necessary.
