Sunnyvale holds virtual open house on proposed East Channel Trail, study phase only

Jeff Knowles, a consultant with Alta Planning and Design, and other members of the study team outlined route options, technical constraints and outreach plans for the proposed East Channel Trail during a virtual City of Sunnyvale community meeting. The study covers roughly 5.5–6 miles along the Santa Clara Valley Water District East Channel Maintenance Road and adjacent on‑street connections between Homestead Road (the Cupertino–Sunnyvale border) and the San Francisco Bay Trail.
The study matters because the corridor would link schools, parks and transit while running along an existing maintenance road that also provides flood protection. "The city has, has not identified funding for construction. So this is really just an information gathering phase," Knowles said, urging public feedback on route preferences, crossings and design tradeoffs.
Consultants said the study was funded for analysis through a combination of VTA Measure B funds and a donation from Google and that Alta Planning and Design was contracted in June 2024 to complete the study. Phase 1 (existing conditions and technical analyses) began in fall 2024;…
