Public comments, staff resignations and community concerns surface at Cartwright meeting

Several public comments at the June 25 Cartwright Governing Board meeting focused on governance, staff reductions and transparency; during public comment and the consent agenda a district early-childhood director, Leslie King, announced her resignation after two decades of service.

Cecilia Moreno, identifying herself as a taxpayer and resident, asked whether the district had resources to pay legal costs tied to recent personnel actions and left contact information for follow-up. Teacher Ramon Lopez said he was speaking as an employee and resident and criticized what he called ongoing public controversies, saying the board's conduct had harmed the district's reputation and urging more transparent hiring and town-hall-style engagement.

Leslie King, director of early childhood for more than 20 years, read a prepared statement explaining her decision to resign. She said her resignation was not because of the employee childcare phase-out and that the economics did not make the program sustainable; rather, she cited "dysfunction on display at most every meeting" and a lack of a thoughtful transition plan as central to her choice. King told the board she supports educator voice but said "we've stopped asking the one question that really matters: what's best for kids?"

Board responses included offers to meet with commenters and repeated statements that the board will follow governance protocols and investigate concerns raised by the public. The consent agenda, which included King's resignation, was approved by roll call.
