Mercer County elementary reports spring outreach, kindness drive and summer kickoff camp

At the Mercer County Board of Education meeting, Mercer County Elementary School Principal Miss Johnson and Family Resource Center coordinator Miss Bray summarized spring programming and outreach activities.
Miss Johnson opened the principal’s report noting it was her fourth year at MCES and recognizing school council members and parent representatives in attendance. Miss Bray, the family resource center coordinator, described several spring activities aimed at building community connections and kindergarten readiness.
Bray said the school’s kindness week in February collected 2,890 food items for the district’s community backpack program. She described Read Across America activities in March that partnered elementary students with high school performers and recognized transportation staff for their support. Bray said the district participated in an early-childhood regional collaborative event called “Let’s Learn Mercer” (partnering with Boyle County) held at the library; she said over 40 families attended and that the event counted approximately 118 total attendees.
Bray also described a May career fair that brought students through eight career stations (examples included firefighters, police, a tractor dealer, a wildlife officer and an air-flight paramedic) and said a summer kickoff camp has 40 children enrolled. The camp will rotate stations covering literacy/art, science/math and fitness, and will conclude with a puppet and magic show and an author visit.
Principal Johnson and board members thanked staff and volunteers for the year’s programming. Several student recognitions and an arts showcase were presented earlier in the meeting; the principal’s report was informational and did not include a board vote.
