Wayne County approves purchase of larger command vehicle; officials say additional equipment will cost more

Wayne County Homeland Security staff told commissioners a planned new command vehicle would take three to four years to manufacture, and the county opted to accept an available, larger vehicle that can be delivered within the fiscal year. Staff requested additional funding to cover the higher vehicle cost and to equip it with radios, computers and networking hardware.
Ahmad Nasser, identified as Wayne County Homeland Security finance manager, said the county requested an additional $320,000 in funding to acquire the nearer-term vehicle and to install communications equipment. “It's a 300, $20,000, additional in the funding...we requested additional $100,000 for those, and we ordered radios and computers and networking system,” Nasser said, explaining manufacturing and installation considerations.
Nasser said the vehicle being procured costs $1,400,000 and that required equipment to outfit the vehicle would total about $1,100,000. Commissioners asked the age of the county’s existing command vehicle (an older 2004 unit) and whether the county would retain the older vehicle; staff said the older unit may still be used for smaller or hard-to-reach events.
Commissioners raised no objections and advanced the budget action to authorize the purchase and equipment expenditures.
