Exchange Club and Amicus present scholarships; board recognizes retirees and approves minutes

The Exchange Club of Dearborn presented academic excellence awards at the Dearborn City School District board meeting Monday, and district leaders recognized retirees, commendations and a slate of donations.
Jeff Click, president of the Exchange Club at Dearborn, told the board the group "present[ed] the Exchange Club of Dearborn academic excellence award" and that valedictorians from the district's comprehensive high schools and the early college would receive one-time $1,500 cash awards. Click also noted the Exchange Club's 100-year presence in the community and asked award recipients to return in the fall to report on their progress.
Executive Director Adam Martin presented the Amicus scholarships, which the district described as $500 awards to three graduating seniors. Martin read the recipients' names and backgrounds: Mohammed Alawan (Dearborn High School), Asia Tello (Edsel Ford High School) and Noor El Yasseri (Fordson High School), noting GPAs and intended college plans as read into the record.
Superintendent Dr. Glenn Malayko opened the meeting with a moment of silence for a student who had died and then recognized a long list of retirees from district staff, including several with more than two decades of service. The board also read multiple commendations for staff and students, including awards earned at university competitions, induction into the International Thespian Society and performance recognitions.
The board acknowledged 19 separate donations presented by staff for school programs and classroom supplies. Examples read into the record included a $151 donation from the Dearborn Education Foundation to Salina Intermediate for a School of Rock program and a $1,500 gift to Howard Elementary for flat drawers to hold artwork.
