The City of North Platte Planning Commission discussed whether to adopt local regulations for food trucks and other mobile food vendors after staff reported an increase in activity.
Planning staff said current city code largely prohibits parking on public streets but does not require a specific permit or permitting process for food trucks that operate on private property with owner permission. Staff said local food vendors have called to request a level playing field, pointing to concerns about unpermitted trucks operating without health inspections.
Commissioners and attendees discussed a range of approaches, including a simple local permit similar to the city’s carnival permitting process, requiring vendors to show state health licenses, and designating approved locations in parks or public gathering spaces. A commissioner summarized: local permitting with contact information, duration, location and a small fee would allow the city to track vendors and address complaints.
Planning staff said they will consult with the city attorney and attempt to draft proposed code language and a permitting approach to present at a future meeting, and asked commissioners and interested vendors to share any sample language they prefer.
