Mayor Rich Stinnett presented a proclamation recognizing the Newton Mexican American Athletic Club's long-running men's fast pitch softball tournament and called on residents to join in observance.
Representatives identified by the mayor as Cameron Becker and Stan Estrada spoke to the commission about the tournament's history and community significance. A speaker for the club said the tournament began in 1946 and described it as "a tradition rooted in resilience, pride, and unity," and noted the event's scholarship awards, family-friendly programming and health and safety outreach.
The proclamation text recited the event's founding year, described the tournament's presence across Newton parks and its community activities including vendors and a longtime "old-timers" game, and declared "July 4 through July 6, 2025" as MMAAC's men's fast pitch softball tournament weekend. A commissioner moved approval; the motion was seconded and carried with the chair calling for "aye" and declaring the motion carried.
The ceremony was primarily ceremonial recognition and did not create a regulatory or budget obligation for the city.
