Commissioners and staff reviewed a series of community events held for Historic Preservation Month and discussed staffing and program priorities for the coming year.
Assistant Director Ashley Atkinson summarized recent outreach: a Saroyan-themed bike tour of downtown and southeast Fresno sites, a record-attendance pub quiz (14 teams registered, 10 completed), a Warner Theatre tour, and visits to the Kern archive and other sites. Public commenters representing the Meux Home Museum and Heritage Fresno invited commissioners to upcoming presentations and offered to host commissioners at museum hours.
Staff reported progress on recruitment: interviews for a historic preservation specialist were completed (10 candidates interviewed), with three finalists to return for second-round interviews the week of July 21 and an anticipated hire potentially in time for Labor Day if schedules allow. Atkinson said the Chinatown Historic District is slated as a priority for the next fiscal year and will be a focus for the incoming preservation specialist.
Commissioners asked participants to forward event photos for the Certified Local Government (CLG) annual report and discussed future anniversary programming for the city’s 140th birthday in October. No formal action was taken; the commission thanked volunteers and community partners for participation.
