Salem Housing Authority reports Yaquina Hall fire contained; schedules public hearing on housing plans

At the Salem Housing Authority (SHA) meeting held June 23 in conjunction with the city council, Deputy Director Jessica Blakely reported that a fire at Yaquina Hall on June 12 was contained to a single unit, the sprinkler system activated and no one was injured.
Blakely said damage was primarily water related because building sprinklers activated; SHA staff assisted residents and the building was re‑entered the same afternoon. She thanked Salem Fire & EMS for its response and recognized SHA staff retiree Renee from accounts payable for long service.
Budget and federal advocacy Blakely also told commissioners the agency is monitoring federal budget proposals that could affect SHA funding for fiscal year 2026; the agency will travel to Washington D.C. in July for advocacy and the FY26 local budget planning will proceed once federal appropriations are clarified.
Public hearing and resident engagement SHA announced a public hearing scheduled for July 14, 2025 — not July 4 as initially misstated — for the Public Housing Authority annual plan, the capital fund plan and the Moving to Work supplement; SHA staff encouraged public participation and said the resident advisory board expressed support for affordable homeownership emphasis.
Consent calendar vote The SHA moved and approved its consent calendar, including minutes from the May 27 meeting, by roll call during the June 23 meeting.
