Wake County board adopts interim budget resolution to keep schools operating through fiscal year start

The Wake County Board of Education approved an interim budget resolution on June 4 that authorizes disbursements necessary to pay salaries, interest and routine expenses for the 2025–26 fiscal year while the district awaits final state allotments.
Finance director David Nader told the board the Wake County Board of Commissioners had fully funded the board’s requested county appropriation but the final state budget remained unresolved. Nader read the statutory language staff relied on, citing North Carolina General Statute 115C-434 as the authorization for interim budget action.
Why it matters: North Carolina law requires boards of education to have a balanced budget at the start of the fiscal year. The resolution allows the district to continue payroll and normal operations during the interval before the final state and federal allotments are released and before the board adopts a final budget.
Board discussion: Board members described the interim resolution as a routine but necessary step. Several members noted that the multiyear state budget process often extends past the July 1 deadline and that an interim resolution preserves continuity while giving staff time to reconcile the district proposed budget with final state figures.
