Local veterans group outlines plan for regional heritage museum and venue

Colonel Al Matheson, speaking for the Southwestern Heritage Association, said the organization has established a 501(c)(3), assembled pledges of artifacts that include restored wagons, engines and firearms, and secured a donated 16,000-square-foot high-bay building that could be reconstructed at a suitable site. Matheson said the association’s vision extends beyond a static museum to a working site with demonstrations, crafts, lapidary and community-focused venues intended to attract car clubs, motorcycle groups and history-focused visitors.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about site visibility and acreage. Matheson said he had talked with officials in neighboring municipalities and with private developers about potential land donations, and he emphasized that the association expected donor funding and endowments to cover operations and building relocation costs; the association was not requesting direct county funding at the meeting.
Commissioners and staff said they were interested in working with the association to identify potential sites — options mentioned in the discussion included land in Enoch, the fairgrounds and other county-owned parcels — and asked Matheson to provide additional details and contacts. Matheson said he would make himself available to meet with commissioners and staff and provided a phone number in the meeting record.
