State Rep. Tiara Auxier introduced at Morgan city work meeting; highlights rural schools and property-tax bills

State Representative Tiara Auxier introduced herself at Morgan's June 24 city work meeting, said she was appointed and later elected in January, and outlined bills she carried during her first legislative session.

Auxier told the council she ran and passed legislation to end an automatic, compounding tax increase affecting school districts and said she sponsored a one-time rural schools grant program intended to help athletic facilities if districts apply. "I was elected in January right before the session started," Auxier said, and described both bills as among the work she carried as a freshman legislator.

Why it matters: Auxier represents a state-level voice that council members said can help buffer state mandates they view as encroaching on local planning. Council members at the meeting repeatedly raised concerns about state-level land-use mandates that they said override local general plans.

Auxier also described work on agricultural issues, including discussing with the U.S. Department of Agriculture ways to protect family farms and to promote local food in schools. She said she serves on both the education and judiciary committees and is making outreach a priority as she prepares for the next election cycle.

Council members and staff repeatedly encouraged further contact and asked Auxier to notify the city when state bills arise that could affect local control. Auxier said her contact information is available on the state website.

Auxier's remarks came at the start of a broader budget and capital-projects discussion. Council members thanked her for attending and asked her to share updates on relevant bills through the Utah League of Cities and Towns and direct outreach to local officials.

The session continued into the council's work items, including an amended 2025 budget and infrastructure updates.
