Planning staff updates council on 14 community area plans; public comment period extended through July

Planning staff provided an informational update on the city’s 14 community area plans during the June 23 meeting.
Monica Holmes (Planning) told council staff has received more than 800 public comments and has been conducting in‑person meetings, virtual office hours and neighborhood outreach. Staff said the Planning Commission planning committee unanimously referred the revised policy map and program guide to council and that staff will post all comments and responses to the website on July 25. Staff scheduled an additional webinar on July 15 (midday sessions split by plan groups) to allow further public comment; that comment period will close the following Friday.
Staff emphasized that adopting the plans creates a single, citywide framework for growth management and that the body of work will provide more consistent criteria for rezonings and guide future specific plans. Councilmembers asked for additional evening outreach options and suggested further partnering with employers, faith organizations and merchant associations to reach residents who cannot attend daytime meetings. The planning director said staff will continue neighborhood meetings and office hours through the summer and will return to the committee on August 4 to review proposed changes and next steps.
No vote was taken; the item was informational and staff will return with a formal package and any proposed edits following the close of the public comment period.
