Board approves Harborview Play Park design contract for Channel Islands Harbor

Harbor Director Michael Tripp summarized the project history: it was first envisioned in the county’s open‑space plan, refined with public input and repositioned near public amenities. The Coastal Commission issued a coastal development permit on May 9. The board authorized a not‑to‑exceed design contract of $167,708 and delegated authority to the harbor director to approve minor contract amendments.
Tripp and harbor staff described project elements including themed play equipment (a ship feature and slides), soft surfacing, picnic pavilion plans and a planned County logo or seal element in the plaza area. Several supervisors expressed appreciation for the park work and asked about skateboard deterrents, daily maintenance and coordination with Parks & Recreation; staff said they will coordinate and may add anti‑skate features and a county emblem embedded in a plaza paving area.
The board approved the contract unanimously and authorized the harbor department to proceed with permit submittal and construction bidding when drawings are complete.
