Board appoints Chip McIntyre to finish Moffat County sheriff's term

Sheriff Casey Hume told the Moffat County Board of County Commissioners on June 24 that he is retiring and recommended Undersheriff Chip McIntyre be appointed to complete his term. The board approved Resolution 2025-59 to appoint McIntyre effective July 2025.
Hume told the commissioners the appointment authority rests with the board under the state constitution and applicable state statute and said he had discussed succession with McIntyre. "I put my full faith and confidence in under sheriff McIntyre to fulfill the remainder of my term," Hume said.
Hume said McIntyre has discussed plans to run for the office in the 2026 regular election cycle. Several commissioners spoke in favor of appointing McIntyre, citing continuity, knowledge of the department and budget familiarity. One commissioner said keeping departmental knowledge in place for the remainder of the term would be preferable to changing leadership midterm.
A motion to adopt Resolution 2025-59 was made and seconded and carried by voice vote.
The resolution names Undersheriff Chip McIntyre as Moffat County sheriff effective July 2025 to complete the current term. No formal vote tally of individual commissioners was recorded in the transcript beyond the unanimous voice approval.
