Fremont County commissioners receive sales-tax report; assessor office to relocate temporarily

FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. — Fremont County budget and finance officer Sean Sutton told the Board of County Commissioners on June 24 that April and May 2025 retail and use tax collections are slightly behind last year but remain ahead of the county’s conservative budget projections.
Sutton reported April retail sales tax for the general fund at $800,171, about $5,403 less than April 2024, and year-to-date retail collections at $2,823,220, roughly $98,860 less than the same period in 2024. Auto use sales tax for May totaled $116,599, down about $4,331 from 2024, with year-to-date collections at $586,484. Sutton said the county nonetheless remains ahead of budget on both lines and noted that historically large collections occur in June and September.
The sheriff’s retail sales tax for April was $533,447, about $3,602 under 2024 and roughly $101,187 behind the sheriff department’s budget to date. The sheriff’s auto use sales tax for May was $77,733, $2,887 less than May 2024 but ahead of budget by $43,073, Sutton said.
County administrator Tony Carocegi reported several administrative notices: job postings for an adult protective services social caseworker (Department of Human Services, application closes June 30), a custodial position in Facilities (closes June 25) and a patrol deputy position for the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office (closes July 9). He also announced a temporary closure and relocation of the Fremont County Assessor’s Office from the Administration Building to the Garden Park Building beginning June 25 through July 7 to allow asbestos removal and a remodel; the project is projected to take about three months once construction begins.
Carocegi also said County Road 12 at Mile Marker 2, north of Cotopaxi School, has been reduced to one lane because of shoulder erosion; an estimated time for full reopening was not provided. He advised motorists to slow through the work zone.
Several commissioners added context on statewide revenue outlooks. Commissioners noted recent state quarterly forecasts projecting lower revenues and reiterated the county’s conservative budgeting approach, which commissioners said helps mitigate potential state shortfalls.
No formal action was required for the reports and announcements.
