Committee discusses replacing decades-old lights at Dickinson Field; bids and safety concerns noted

Andy Cox, president of American Little League, told the Parks and Recreation Committee the lighting system at Dickinson Field is decades old and needs replacement for safety and performance reasons.
“It's, it's between 40 and 50 years old,” Cox said of the existing system, and he told the committee that one wooden pole broke and fell this spring. Cox said the city received approximately $10,000 from insurance to replace the single pole but that a broader upgrade is needed.
Cox described LED field-lighting systems from Musco and said LEDs reduce light spill and deliver more focused illumination: “it puts all the light right on the field.” He provided the committee with product brochures and two bids—one for materials and one for installation—and said ditching, wiring and potential sprinkler-system impacts will be part of the work.
Cox also raised spectator comfort and suggested adding bleacher shades for west-side seating. A committee member noted the city has worked with Musco previously and recommended adding the project to the parks infrastructure-improvement list. The committee discussed funding constraints and competing priorities for limited ball-field dollars.
No motion or contract award occurred during the meeting. Committee members supported further review of bids and agreed to place the lighting and related shade/bleacher work on the parks’ infrastructure list for future allocation and scheduling.
