Midland Soup Kitchen reports rising summer demand; serving up to 170 meals daily

Midland Soup Kitchen Ministry told the council it has seen a sharp summer increase in demand, serving up to 170 meals some days and averaging 140–160 daily since April after taking on meal service for other nonprofits. The organization said it served nearly 36,000 meals last year and is asking for continued community support.
Representatives of the Midland Soup Kitchen Ministry reported increased demand and rising meal counts during public comment.
Nathan Ivy, speaking for the soup kitchen, said the organization historically served about 120 meals daily but, since April, has been serving between 140 and 160 meals per day and reached as many as 170 on the busiest day. He said the increase followed the Salvation Army’s cessation of its lunch service and that the soup kitchen has begun accepting bused guests from other nonprofits.
Ivy said the soup kitchen served 35,950 meals last year, a 10% increase over the prior year, and expected demand to continue rising. He invited council members to visit their operations and thanked the city for prior support and recent land approval that helped the ministry.
Council members thanked Ivy and the ministry for their service and encouraged continued community support for the nonprofit’s operations.
