City staff presented an amendment to the city code on June 23 that would allow sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages at City Park properties and facilities in conjunction with a special event or permitted activity, subject to prior written approval and specified conditions.
Under the draft language, an event organizer or responsible party must obtain prior written approval from the city manager’s designee and comply with applicable requirements, which may include securing a valid temporary alcoholic-beverage license from the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco if required, obtaining general-liability and liquor-liability insurance naming the City of Tamarac as additionally insured, and providing security, crowd-control and sanitation measures as determined necessary by the city manager’s designee. The provision retains the general prohibition on alcohol in parks except where explicitly authorized under the newly added section.
Staff said countywide research showed that most municipalities in Broward County already allow alcohol at permitted events; staff cited Lazy Lakes as an example of a small municipality that lacks such park facilities. The item was presented for second reading on the upcoming commission agenda.
