Melissa, a city staff member, said the commission-approved criteria require applicants to be Tamarac residents and to provide proof of enrollment or acceptance into a two-year, four-year or trade school program; adults returning to school are eligible under the stated criteria. She and other staff said the selection criteria were set by the City Commission and do not require specific academic minimums, such as a particular grade-point average. Melissa said the presentation at the commission meeting will include recipients by district rather than calling each individual name to shorten ceremony time; staff said 45 recipients were selected but only about 40 will be present at the meeting.
During the staff review, a resident pressed staff for further detail on the scholarship criteria and on whether recipients who later drop out would be required to return funds. Staff said the repayment question had not been discussed and that they were unsure of a return requirement.
No formal action or vote occurred; staff described the funding source and the criteria ahead of the commission meeting on June 25.
