Student representative outlines plan to pursue Orange County Green Star School recognition

Student representative Dylan Escoff used his final report on June 18 to describe an initiative to pursue recognition from the Orange County Green Star School Program.

Escoff said he has met with principal McElroy and connected junior leaders who will continue the effort next year. The project aims to assemble a student-led green team focused on reducing waste, adding recycling receptacles (paper and food-waste options were mentioned), and implementing practices that would qualify the district for the program’s first Green Star tier.

“We are assembling a green team…who will work to ensure that waste is placed in proper receptacles,” Escoff said, adding the goal is to decrease waste production without adding extra work to custodial staff. He said the effort is in early stages and that incoming student leaders will carry the project forward.

Board members and administrators praised Escoff’s service in his final report as student representative; no formal board action was recorded on the sustainability project during the meeting. The presentation indicates student-led sustainability work could proceed under school leadership and with district staff support.
