Council accepts loan of historic school bell for display at city hall

The Moroni City Council voted June 19 to accept on loan a historic school bell from a local family for display on city property and approved allowing volunteers to construct a protective bell cot and base, with the city covering modest site materials and installation costs.
City staff presented a written loan agreement prepared by staff member Justin that would place the bell on loan to Moroni City for 50 years. The council heard that volunteers — including Brent Bailey and Lamar Dykes — have donated labor to build a brick base and that Jay (public works) would construct a bell cot to protect the bell from weather. Staff estimated materials and incidental costs at about $2,500.
Council member Prestwich moved to accept the bell on loan from the Licensed family; Wolfenstein seconded the motion. Council voted in favor, and staff said they would ensure the loan agreement includes insurance language to cover damage or loss.
