Salia Preserve trail and parking complete; land trust to install signage and host opening

The Richmond Rural Preservation Land Trust reported completion of the parking area, trails and a pedestrian bridge at the Salia Preserve and told the council it will install signage and organize an opening event.
The trust said the 112-acre preserve now has a trailhead at the end of Chelsea Farm Drive and about 1.7 miles of blazed trail, a kiosk and a bridge built by Eagle Scout projects. Work was funded by a Rhode Island DEM trail grant awarded through an application first submitted in 2020; the trust asked the council to note that construction costs were paid upfront and the trust will be reimbursed by DEM after final paperwork is submitted. The grant was amended to add $40,000 and extended through December 2025 to allow time for completion and documentation. Volunteers and land-trust members celebrated the project’s conclusion and said the preserve will be opened to the public once final signs and kiosk maps are in place.
Councilors thanked the land trust for its work and noted the preserve’s attractive features and future trail signage.
