The Fountain Hills Town Council directed the town manager to negotiate a contract with the Lesota law firm to serve as town attorney, approving the recommendation by a 5–2 vote after public comment and extended council discussion about candidate qualifications and prior local involvement.
Council held interviews with four candidate firms during a rapid procurement process. Councilmember Skillegorn initially moved to negotiate with the Lesota firm; after discussion and public comment the motion passed 5–2. Supporters cited the firm’s litigation experience and perceived value of a smaller, more personalized legal team. Opponents favored a larger, established regional firm they said offered deeper bench strength and fewer political ties to local factions.
Councilmember Calavianakis and Councilmember McMahon voted no. Councilmembers Watts, Skillegorn, Earl, Vice Mayor Larabee and Mayor Bridal voted yes. Vice Mayor Larabee said she preferred a smaller firm for personalized service; Councilmember McMahon and Councilmember Calavianakis raised concerns about prior litigation handled by the Lesota firm and flagged appearances of political entanglement.
The council did not finalize contract terms at the meeting; the motion authorized the town manager to negotiate and execute an agreement once terms are acceptable. The town manager will return to council with the final contract for ratification, or present it for public review as required under town procurement rules.
