Dozens of Hillsboro School District 1J community members used audience participation at the June 17 meeting to urge the board to reinstate coach Ian Reynoso to full coaching duties at Glencoe High School.
Speakers at the meeting described Reynoso as a teacher and coach who has worked with students at Glencoe for years and credited him with mentoring athletes, leading leadership-council programs, keeping open weight-room access for athletes year-round, and supporting students beyond sport performance. Multiple speakers said they believed removing or restricting Reynoso from coaching would punish hundreds of student athletes and described him as a model of positive leadership.
Lincoln Kemper, a student who described participating in coachReynosos leadership programming, said Reynoso helped with time management and personal growth and asked the board, "Please do not let the voice of a few drown out the voice of many."
Parents and former youth coaches said they had volunteered and remained engaged in programs led by Reynoso even after their own children graduated. Several speakers said they had seen the coachs focus on character-building and on helping students make better decisions, and urged the district to pursue remedies other than removing him from the team. One parent, Leslie Podwis, said, "It would be a huge loss and travesty if this board does not reinstate you to your full capacity. Hundreds of student athletes will miss out on the positive love and influence my kids have received from you."
Speakers included current and former athletes, parents and coaches; several noted they would support the district community in any steps needed to restore him to full duties. Presenters asked the board to consider restorative or remedial steps rather than punitive measures and argued that Reynoso's presence benefits the student body.
Board members did not take action on personnel matters during audience time. District policy limits public comment on individual personnel actions and personnel decisions remain an administrative responsibility; the board received the comments during the public-comment period and did not announce any personnel vote at the meeting.
The board did not respond directly to each commenter during audience time but may follow up through administrative channels where appropriate.
