Trinity County wins grant to study paratransit dial‑a‑ride; consultant selection to be presented July 1

Sarah Saa, transportation planner for the Trinity County Transportation Commission, told the board during a June 17 public hearing that the commission was awarded a 2024–25 grant to update the county’s short‑range transit plan and coordinated public transit plan.
Saa said the plans will specifically evaluate requests received during the unmet‑transit‑needs process for a paratransit dial‑a‑ride service serving seniors, people with disabilities and other residents who need more flexible transit options. Staff completed an RFP and selected a consultant; the contract will be brought to the board on July 1 for approval. If approved, the work will include public outreach, service area and fare analysis, staffing needs and cost estimates so the county can determine whether a paratransit offering would be sustainable.
Saa told the board that staff do not want to implement a service that cannot be sustained and that the planning process is intended to identify a viable, funded service model before any service is launched.
Why this matters: Access to specialized transit can be critical for seniors and people with disabilities in rural counties; a feasibility study funded by the grant will determine costs and operational requirements and inform future budget and service decisions.
