Council backs ebike policy research and calls for traffic‑calming plan; proposes a traffic safety commission

The Ojai City Council on June 17 directed staff to pursue several public‑safety items: develop an ebike policy and education campaign, research traffic‑calming approaches, and report on creation of a traffic safety commission.
Several council members and staff said an ebike‑education and enforcement approach is already underway and should be formalized with an overall policy that clarifies where ebikes may operate and what safety equipment and rules apply. The police department and public works staff said they have started voluntary education and selective enforcement and would return a proposed policy to the council.
Councilmembers also asked staff to prepare a concept review on traffic‑calming measures (speed humps, curb extensions, crosswalks and other tools) and to consider a public workshop so residents can weigh in. Several members proposed forming a traffic safety commission — a standing advisory body with staff liaisons from public works and police — to vet neighborhood traffic requests before matters proceed to council.
Council also requested staff to continue work on a speed‑hump policy being developed and to fold that work into the larger traffic‑calming concept review. No immediate regulatory changes were adopted; staff will return policy drafts and recommendations for council action.
