Chris Miller, representing the Roselle Park Soccer Club, thanked the board for field permits and community support, described the club’s volunteer and donation efforts and announced the creation of the Jeffrey Luna scholarship.
“Miller said the scholarship is named in honor of a remarkable young man who sadly lost his battle with cancer less than a year ago,” the club said in comments to the board. The scholarship — arranged in coordination with school officials — will be awarded at graduation to one male and one female senior who played high school soccer and who “embodied qualities of character, dedication, integrity, and empathy.”
Why this matters: The scholarship recognizes a student from the Roselle Park community and underscores community-club partnerships with the district. Miller also emphasized the club’s charitable activities — field improvements, food drives for the Cosimo Center, and support for school events — and noted that the club does not turn children away for financial reasons.
Ending: Miller asked the board to recognize the partnership between the club and district athletics; the club will present the scholarship at the high school’s graduation ceremony.
