Roselle Park juniors: 87.8% pass ELA on NJGPA; math pass rate lower at 55.1%

Miss Bodek, the district testing coordinator and director of guidance, presented results from the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) administered to the district’s 11th graders in March.
She reported that 148 students took the assessment this spring. “Of those 148 students, 87.8 percent passed the English language arts assessment,” Bodek said, noting that this figure was above the state average of 80.7 percent. For math, 55.1 percent of students passed; Bodek said that was about three percentage points below the state average but an improvement from two years earlier when the district’s math pass rate was 47.9 percent.
Why this matters: NJGPA results affect students’ graduation progress and the district’s instructional planning. Bodek highlighted notable subgroup improvements: English Language Learners rose from 29 percent graduation-ready last year to 62 percent this cycle, a shift she attributed in part to program changes and the arrival of an ML director.
Graduation pathways and next steps: Bodek said many juniors have alternative means to meet the graduation requirement, such as SAT/ACT/PSAT scores. She told the board that 90 percent of the junior class was considered “graduation ready” when alternate pathways were included, leaving 15 students still needing to meet the requirement via retesting, support classes, SAT attempts or portfolio submission to NJDOE.
The district plans to offer support classes, encourage students to take SAT opportunities in August, and retest eligible students in fall sessions. The district will post individual student reports (ICRs) to be sent to families and has indicated more testing-data updates — including ACCESS and NJSLA results — will be shared in the fall.
Ending: The board received the NJGPA update; Bodek and the guidance staff will send individual reports home and continue interventions for students who remain below graduation-ready thresholds.
