Remote commenter asks assembly to oppose federal land-disposal provision; vice mayor pledges draft resolution

Becky Knight, calling in to the June 16 Petersburg Borough Assembly meeting, urged the assembly to oppose a federal legislative provision she said would mandate disposal of roughly 3,000,000 acres of Forest Service and BLM land across 11 states, including Alaska.
"Unless something has changed in the last couple of days, the reconciliator is a provision for, quote, mandatory disposal of about 3,000,000 acres of forest service and BLM public lands in 11 states, specifically for residential housing," Knight said during public comment and asked the assembly to send a resolution of opposition, saying the disposal would not solve Petersburg's housing shortage and the borough would be better served if the lands remain in federal ownership.
In assembly discussion later in the meeting, Vice Mayor Mary Marsh said she would work with the clerk to prepare a resolution opposing the federal land-disposal proposal and expected to present it at the assembly's first meeting in July. Marsh said she had read material on the proposal and did not like how it might affect the community, and asked time to draft language for board consideration.
Ending: The assembly did not vote on the request during the June 16 meeting; Vice Mayor Marsh said she will bring draft resolution language for assembly consideration at the first meeting in July.
