Staff presentation: Shannon Ferguson, planning department staff, described the Huntington Hotel as a 12‑story Italian Renaissance Revival‑style building constructed in 1924 by Weeks & Day and clad in brick and terracotta. The nomination proposes significance under National Register criterion C for design and construction, with a period of significance of 1924. Ferguson said the nomination was prepared by Page & Turnbull on behalf of the property owner and noted the nomination is part of a process tied to eligibility for a 20% historic preservation tax credit. The department recommended adopting a resolution of findings to forward to the Office of Historic Preservation. "The nomination proposes a period of significance of 1924," Ferguson said, summarizing staff’s recommendation and the link to tax‑credit review.
Public comment: Woody Labounty of San Francisco Heritage spoke in support of the nomination and suggested the property could also qualify under criterion A for association with events and social history. "We support this," Labounty said.
Commission action: Commissioner Vergara moved to support the nomination and forward findings to the state; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously. The department noted the city, as a certified local government, has a 60‑day review window and that comments must be submitted to the Office of Historic Preservation by August 1 to meet the state’s review schedule (the state historic resource commission is scheduled to act on the nomination at its August 8 meeting). Staff also said exterior rehabilitation work is already underway and expected to be completed in early 2026.
