She said she had checked district libraries and found "60 books" she regarded as pornographic, and she linked concerns about sexualized material to student mental health and human trafficking risks. Ariza asked the board to give the concern "serious thought" when reviewing materials in the coming school year.
The board did not respond during the call-to-the-public portion; the district's call-to-the-public statement reminded speakers that board members cannot discuss or take action on items raised during public comment under Arizona open meeting law, though staff may be directed to follow up.
Also at call to the public, Heather Schmidt, president of the Paradise Valley Education Association, thanked Interim Superintendent Jason Reynolds and longtime board secretary Diane Tisman for their service; those remarks were expressions of appreciation rather than policy requests.
