Architects present community-led design process for Indian Bend rebuild

Architects from Orcutt Winslow and the district presented an update on the Indian Bend school rebuild, describing a community-driven design process, site concepts and an approximate construction schedule.

Saravanan Bala of Orcutt Winslow told the board the project has emphasized engagement with a steering committee composed of staff, parents, educators, administrators and students. He said the team used live polling and charrettes to develop three "memorable goals" for the project: reduce friction so collaboration can flow, connect to nature and wellness, and create spaces for exploration that support partnerships and career pathways.

The architects said they have generated multiple site concepts, consolidated community feedback and plan to return in the fall with refined visuals tied to procurement and construction questions. They noted the rebuild assumes current enrollment and designs in capacity for growth, and they identified potential adjacent-ways work (including the school's fire lane) that will be coordinated with the project.

Board members asked about community outreach and translation of materials, how participants were chosen for the steering committee (the principal and PTO were used to invite parents, staff and a few community members), partnerships with the city park next door, and environmental/health safeguards during demolition. District staff said students will be relocated off-site during demolition, fencing will be used and the facilities team is reviewing asbestos and other hazards as part of standard project due diligence. No vote occurred on the presentation; the architects said they expect to return with refined designs in early fall.
