Council approves ordinance to let Recreation & Parks Commission set program fees prior to council review

The Santa Maria City Council on Tuesday approved an ordinance amending Titles 2 and 10 of the municipal code to allow the Recreation and Parks Commission to review and set fees and rules for recreation programs, then forward those items to the council for final action.
Director of Recreation and Parks Mr. Posada and Recreation and Parks Commission Chair Rebecca Carey told the council the change would reduce the number of minor program items — such as seasonal classes — that currently must come before the full council, while preserving the council’s ultimate approval role. Carey said the commission would act as the council’s proxy to take public comment, set fees in line with the methodology the council recently adopted, and forward items to the council at the next regular meeting for final review.
Council members moved and seconded the ordinance change and approved it by roll call: Council member Flores Aye; Mayor Pro Tem Padilla (as recorded) Aye; Mayor Patino Aye. The ordinance does not delegate final approval; council retains authority to accept or return commission recommendations.
