Foothill Unity Center reports rising demand, seeks volunteers and community support

Joanna Hirasuna, the new executive director of the Foothill Unity Center, addressed the Monrovia City Council on June 17 to describe a sharp rise in demand for the nonprofit’s services.
Hirasuna said the center provided “over 700,000 meals” last year across its service area and is averaging about 700 to 1,000 families per month at its Monrovia location. The agency distributes food Monday, Wednesday and Friday from its Monrovia site and provides case management, vision screening, dental referrals and homeless prevention services. The center serves residents across 12 cities in the San Gabriel Valley; Hirasuna thanked the city for funding that helps the center prioritize seniors and invited council members and residents to tour the facility and volunteer.
The council and staff welcomed the update and noted the center’s growing caseload, particularly in the wake of recent fires and regional demand. Hirasuna also announced she is expecting, and the council offered congratulations.
