Committee backs two-year renewal of Wisconsin hazardous materials response contract

The Wausau Public Health and Safety Committee on June 16 voted to approve renewal of the city’s contract with the State of Wisconsin for hazardous materials response services, continuing the city’s two-year participation in the state system.
The police/chief staff described the regional HAZMAT structure, saying the state has eight different teams and that Wausau functions as one of the six Type 2 teams and is the farthest north team in that grouping. The chief noted the city covers a large geographic area but reports a relatively low number of calls.
A motion to renew the two-year contract was made by Council member Larson, seconded by Watson, and carried by voice vote with no recorded opposition. Staff said the item will be scheduled for the next available council meeting for final signature and placement on the council agenda.
The contract renewal maintains the city’s operational role in the state hazardous-materials response network and preserves mutual-aid capability for the region.
