Forest Moon Festival draws national coverage; city staff and volunteers credited

Organizers of the Forest Moon Festival told the Crescent City City Council the third annual event drew renewed attention and wider attendance, including national media mentions and a broad geographic mix of visitors.
Cassandra Heselstein, participating by Zoom for the Humboldt Del Norte Film Commission, said the festival was mentioned in People magazine's special edition listing "top reasons to love California," and that radio and podcast outlets, including Rebel Force Radio, provided extensive coverage. She told the council the festival recorded attendees from more than 15 states and that around 60 vendors participated across Del Norte and Humboldt counties in the festival's passport and scavenger-hunt activities.
City Manager Eric Weir and Recreation and Events Coordinator Kelly Viola credited city staff, public works, police and fire personnel and numerous volunteers for the event's success. Public works staff and seasonal employees assisted with setup; police and fire provided public-safety support; volunteers staffed activities such as an obstacle course, costume contests and family events; lifeguards and youth volunteers also helped.
Organizers said the festival has built momentum: in past years it earned attention from the New York Times and local outlets, and this year international coverage and podcasting exposure helped raise awareness beyond the region. The council viewed a photo slideshow and city staff highlighted participation by local media, costumers and film participants, including an actor from Return of the Jedi who attended.
Council members thanked organizers and staff and discussed the festival's potential to attract more visitors next year. No formal council action was required; staff and organizers said they are already planning for next year and will pursue additional promotion and partnerships.
